Beautiful Places I Have Seen.
I have walked beside the Danube.
From the age of twelve or thereabouts I had a great desire to see both the rivers Rhine and Danube. This was not at all the time to be to be wishing for such visits as WW2 was rapidly approaching. The fascination with the two rivers continued through the war years. I never lost the desire to see these great rivers which wind their way through Europe.
Quite a number of years ago when I was staying with relatives in Serbia I discovered to my delight that the Danube on its long journey through Europe was only about three miles from where I was staying. A family friend was kind enough to drive Joe and me to a spot where we could walk to the river’s edge and so along right beside the water. I can still hardly believe it. I saw a Russian cruise ship I think it was on its way to whatever destination it was bound for. On our way back from our delightful walk we went on a raft that was moored near the water’s edge. There were tables and chairs on the raft and coffee and wine was being served so although I have not yet sailed along the Danube I have at least been on it while having our coffee. Or was it a glass of wine? I think it may have been both.
As for the Rhine I have not been to that great river yet. Time will tell about that. When I was learning German at school I was fascinated by the Lorelei Rock where a beautiful lady sits and combs her hair with a golden comb. I was even able to recite a poem in German about that legend. I think she may have been luring unfortunate sailors to their doom! Rather like Circe though the songs she sang changed sailors into pigs, another very unpleasant lady!
I have not reached the Rhine yet. The only German river I have walked beside is the Main. We had a visit to Bamberg a few years ago. The Main flows through that town.
